Two Thai companies, namely PTT Exploration and Production Public Company Limited (PTTEP) and PT Jembayan Muarabara and Sakari distributed Rp. 500 million to the National Zakat Agency (Baznas) to help the victims of the earthquake and tsunami in Sulawesi.
The details of the donation were Rp. 300 million from PTTEP and Rp. 200 million from PT Jembayan Muarabara and Sakari.
General PTTEP Manager Titi Thongjen said the reason of choosing Baznas to channel the aid is because according to him, Baznas is an institution that experienced in helping disaster affected people and had a social assistance fund management program.
"Prior giving the donations, we first checked several agencies. We want the agencies that we give donations are trustworthy institutions that can channel aid to the people who need it efficiently," he said.
"We chose Baznas because of its track record, Baznas often handled disaster areas, many of their workers took to the field," said Titi.
Director of PT Jembayan Muarabara and Sakari, Surachai Sukhahuta said, the company was moved to help the victims of the earthquake and tsunami in Central Sulawesi because their country had experienced the tsunami disaster in 2004. According to him, a number of the worst affected areas were Phang Na, Ranong, Trang, Krabi and Phuket.
"Hopefully the results of this collaboration can help rebuild Central Sulawesi so that the local community can work as usual," Surachai said.
"Today, the company leaders from Thailand come here to help our brothers in Central Sulawesi who have experienced a disaster," Baznas President Director Arifin Purwakananta said in Jakarta on Friday.
Arifin also expressed his gratitude and appreciation to the leaders of Thai companies for their trust in Baznas.
